In July 2024 we sailed onboard P&O Cruises Iona to the Norwegian Fjords. On day 3, we explored the port of Stavanger with our parents, its always been one of our favourite ports so we were very excited to share the experience with our family.
Breakfast Onboard
We started our day bright and early as we intended to heading out straight after breakfast. Finding a spot for breakfast was a bit tricky as it was super busy in The Quays, so we opted for the Horizon Buffet. There, we enjoyed a mix of pastries, fresh fruit, and even full English breakfast options.
Enjoying Stavanger
Once off the ship, we made our way to the front of Iona for some family selfies, it’s not every day you get such an amazing backdrop! Then it was off to explore the cobblestone streets of Stavanger’s Old Town. The white wooden houses and holy cobblestone streets are unique and beautiful but it is worth noting that those with mobility issues may find this area difficult to navigate.
The harbour area was busy with boat tours heading out to Pulpit Rock. By mid morning there were still spots available but we’d say, it’s worth booking early if you’re planning to go.
We wandered through the shops in the city centre, picking up a few essentials. Fun fact, we somehow always end up at H&M in Stavanger, it’s conveniently close to the ship, perfect for those “oops, I forgot” moments! On this occasion dad had forgotten his trainers.
Back Onboard
After a morning of walking, shopping, and sightseeing, we headed back to the ship for lunch at The Quays. As lots of people were still ashore we didn’t struggle to find a table and enjoyed our usual favourites.
We spent the afternoon playing cards at The Keel & Cow and while we were in there we were treated to a performance from the fantastic the Stavanger Gospel Choir.
The Limelight Club
After freshening up, we got ready for an evening at The Limelight Club. Arriving early to get a good table is important as every view in this venue is not equal. Initially the staff tried to seat us at one of the table at the back of the venue, which we were not happy with but after discussing this with the head waiter we were moved to one of the available tables further forward.
We always enjoy the meal in Limelight and it does feel as though the cover charge is worth paying. You aren’t just paying for the better food though and Lee Mead’s performance was the highlight of our night. His mix of musical theatre and pop, along with his storytelling, had the whole audience captivated. It’s such an intimate venue that it felt like a private concert. Even Dad, who isn’t usually a fan of this type of entertainment, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Late Night Laughs
After the show, we stayed for some live music by The Limelight Band, followed by a comedy set from Herbie Adams during the new Limelight Laughs series. It’s strictly adults-only and a great addition to the late night lineup.
Our night didn’t end there though, we headed to The Clubhouse for some dancing and drinks before grabbing a late night snack from the buffet. It wasn’t the best selection we’ve seen, but it hit the spot after such a packed day.
We’ve had an amazing time exploring Stavanger and enjoying the unique experiences aboard Iona. Tomorrow, we’re excited to explore Olden and share even more adventures with you.
