Ambassador Cruise Line - Ambition Day 3 - Honfleur and Dinner in Saffron

On the third day of our six-day spring getaway on Ambition, we arrived in Honfleur, France We had never visited this port before so were excited to enjoy a day exploring.

An Early Wake Up Call

We woke up to an announcement into our cabin at 8 am letting us know that we had arrived in Honfleur even though we had actually docked the night before. After a late night the night before we weren’t very impressed by this. We decided to stay in bed for a little bit longer before we got up and getting a drink at the Clifton Lounge before heading off the ship. It was nice to relax before we ventured out into the town.

Lunch

For lunch, we decided to eat onboard. Lizzy went to the grill and grabbed a simple burger and fries, nothing fancy but it did the job. Laura went to the buffet and ended up with noodles, fries, and a slice of pizza. It was a bit of a random combination, but it filled us up.

Exploring Honfleur

Once we got off the ship, we noticed how windy it was, definitely not ideal for a boat trip, which seemed to be one of the main attractions in Honfleur, so we decided to skip that. We took the shuttle bus into the town centre and started wandering around the harbour area. There were lots of shops, and in particular we noticed a lot of chocolate shops. We also found a lovely park with flowers everywhere, which was a great spot to enjoy the sunshine.

One of the highlights was St Catherine’s Church, which had beautiful wooden architecture. We were even able to view some relics of St Teresa of Lisieux, which was fascinating. We also bumped into Lisa and Giles from Travelling Light, which was such a nice surprise! We had been hoping to meet them on board, but we hadn’t managed to spot them, so it was fun to catch up in a local chocolate shop.

On the way back to the ship, we decided to walk instead of taking the shuttle. It wasn’t far, and we really enjoyed getting some extra steps in. We passed a new development in Honfleur, where they’re recreating the original Norman Shipyard, which was pretty cool to see.

Dinner at Saffron

We had a lovely dinner at the Saffron specialty restaurant tonight. We shared a mixed Indian starter plate with chicken tikka, samosas, and kebabs. For mains, Laura had the butter chicken, which was super tasty and Lizzy had the Royal Indian Maharaja Thali with a selection of small dishes. The food was really good, and we were definitely impressed. For dessert, we had a little tasting plate, which included some ice cream and a small fried doughnut. We had mixed feelings about this one but we did manage to enjoy some of it.

Entertainment at the CavernAfter dinner, we went to the Cavern to watch some traditional ballroom dancing. It was so fun to see everyone getting involved, and we were really impressed by how quickly they picked up the steps! We also checked out Friendly Feud, a game show based on Family Fortunes. The contestants were hilarious, and the audience seemed to have a great time.

Comedy Show in the Theatre

We made our way to the theatre for a comedy performance by Pauline Daniels. She was a bit of a different style to what we’re used to and we definitely weren’t her target audience, but others did seem to enjoy the show.

Nightcap at the Purple Turtle

To finish the night, we went to the Purple Turtle wine bar for a drink with Dan and Jay. It was really nice to sit and chat in the quiet of the bar (though it did feel a bit like sitting in a corridor with all the foot traffic!).

Reflections on Honfleur

We’ve really enjoyed our time in Honfleur today. It’s such a picturesque town with so much charm, and we loved the peaceful walk around the harbour and park. The food at Saffron was definitely a highlight, and it’s always nice to discover new places and meet new people onboard.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to St Peter Port, Guernsey and we’re hoping to grab a nice lunch ashore.
