Day two onboard Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition was our first sea day, so we took the opportunity to explore the ship, enjoy some entertainment, and wind down before tomorrow’s adventure in France.
A Leisurely Start to the Day
We didn’t set an alarm this morning, which was such a treat after last night’s late finish. By the time we left our cabin, it was 10:30am, unfortunately, we just missed breakfast, which ends at 10am. It’s worth noting that on Ambition, food service doesn’t resume until lunchtime at 12, so we weren’t able to get anything to eat until then.
Morning Entertainment
We started the day with a soft drink in the Clifton Bar, where we were lucky to catch one of the ship’s vignettes at 11:15am. These 15-minute performances feature two actors and pack so much talent and energy into a short time. We’d been told these were a must-see, and this one didn’t disappoint, the audience absolutely loved it!
Exploring the Ship
After the vignette, we strolled around the promenade deck and ventured up to the top deck for a better view. It was a lovely chance to get our bearings and enjoy some fresh air before lunch.
Finally Lunch Time
We discovered that the dining room was opening just as we passed by, so we couldn’t resist heading in. We were seated at a shared table, which is always one of our favourite things, it’s so fun to chat with fellow passengers over a meal.
For lunch, the dining experience on Ambition is a mix of self-serve and table service. For starters, you help yourself to soup or salad from a buffet station. Laura tried the leek soup, while Lizzy went for a selection of salads. For mains, Laura had a seafood paella, while Lizzy enjoyed a breaded chicken dish with spaghetti in a rich tomato sauce topped with cheese. Dessert is also buffet style, with options ranging from cakes to fresh fruit. Laura opted for cake, while Lizzy tried to stay healthy with some pineapple.
Afternoon Adventures
Post-lunch, we headed back up to the top deck to stretch our legs. Though the wind was strong, the mild temperatures made it a pleasant walk. Afterward, we made our way to the theatre for a play called Hell Hath No Fury, performed by two members of the show cast. It was a unique experience for a sea day, though we did notice a few audience members nodding off during the show.
Afternoon Tea and Snacks
Later, we explored the afternoon tea offerings, though neither of us are big fans of tea. The cakes, scones, and sandwiches weren’t quite to our taste, so we grabbed a quick bite at the Grill instead, opting for pizza to tide us over.
We then headed to the Cavern lounge for a drink and unknown to us, the bingo was about to take place. This was taken very seriously by the players, with silence expected in the room. Seeing the impressive prize money, we’re now tempted to give it a go later in the cruise!
A Change in Plans for Formal Night
As evening approached, we returned to our cabin to get ready for formal night. Unfortunately, an announcement informed us that the captain’s welcome event had been altered due to his involvement in a medivac situation. While we were disappointed to miss meeting him, we fully understood and hoped for a swift recovery for the person involved.
The event continued in the Palladium Theatre with a classical performance by a pianist and violinist. It was a beautiful set, complemented by complimentary sparkling wine and soft drinks. Everyone looked amazing in their formal attire, and we had a lovely chat with the couple seated next to us.
Dinner and Entertainment
Dinner was another highlight of the day. Though we initially struggled to find our table after entering from a different entrance, we soon settled in and had an absolute blast with our table mates. The laughter and camaraderie made the four course meal even more enjoyable.
For starters, Lizzy had prawn cocktail, while Laura tried a duck dish. Soups came next with tomato for Lizzy and fish chowder for Laura. Mains were lamb for Lizzy and salmon for Laura, followed by dessert, Lizzy’s cheeseboard and Laura’s chocolate soufflé (which was more cake like but still delicious). The only hiccup was needing to request wine refills, as the waitstaff seemed a bit stretched.
The evening entertainment was a musical production, Love Is in the Air, featuring a selection of love songs. The performances focused on singing rather than elaborate choreography, and the quality of the vocalists was great.
Late-Night Chats
Our night ended with drinks in the Purple Turtle bar, where we had a great time chatting with Dan and Jay from Sail Away Magazine. The bar staff were incredibly accommodating, letting us linger even as they started closing up. Late night snacks also made an appearance in the lounges, the chicken nuggets on cocktail sticks, while basic, hit the spot.
We finally returned to our cabin after 2am, marvelling at how quickly the evening had flown by.
Looking Ahead
Day two was a perfect mix of relaxation, entertainment, and socialising. We’re excited to explore Honfleur in France tomorrow and can’t wait to share our adventures with you.
